“With each failure there is a loss of bone stock, both in quality and quantity,
making revision increasingly difficult and results even more unsatisfactory.”
For primary total hip arthroplasty (THA), the decision about which prosthesis to
use is based on considerations of performance, survivorship and quality of life.
However, a difficult revision case with extensive bone loss may mean settling for
more limited goals. The current practice of introducing bigger, purpose-designed
revision prostheses, often implanted with large amounts of cement, has not
offered reliable results.
