Aetna considers intra-operative electromyographic (EMG) monitoring of the facial nerve medically necessary for members undergoing any of the following intra-cranial neuro-otological surgeries: Surgery for acoustic neuroma, cranial based lesions, or congenital auricular lesions; or Microvascular decompression of the facial nerve for hemifacial spasm; or Vestibular neurectomy for Meniere's disease; or Surgical excision of neuromas of the facial nerve.
