The goal of optical measurement is to calculate the location and orientation of an object or tool within a defined coordinate system. Optical tracking uses a position sensor to detect infrared-emitting or retro-reflective markers affixed to a tool or object. The Current Industry Standard
For this technology, a camera emits and tracks infrared signals reflecting off small spheres attached to the surgical instrument (called the Registration Pointer) and the Patient-tracking Reference. The instrument positioning is then triangulated and visually displayed on the monitor.
